STUDENT SERVICES

"Career Services has been a tremendous asset to me during my 1L job search. I am a first generation law student and literally had no idea how to begin my search. It was even more troubling trying to figure out how to conduct an out-of-state job search. However, the career services handbook, website, and the career counselors were very informative in helping me to secure a job after my first year. The counselors helped me to come up with a job search strategy that fit my interests. I ended up receiving several employment offers and secured not only one fellowship, but two fellowship awards!"

Jennifer D. Newton, Class of 2007

Individual Counseling Appointments
Our staff is available to assist you with career planning and your job search. Counseling is offered on a continuous basis beginning in your first year. The office of Career Services has an open door policy so that students may drop by at their convenience or schedule an appointment to meet with one of our career counselors. Counselors are available to counsel students and alumni about career objectives, job search strategies, qualifications, legal career and alternative career goals as well as provide individual assistance in the formulation of resumes and cover letters.

On-Campus and Off-Campus Interviews
The Office of Career Services hosts on-campus interviews in the fall and spring of each academic year and solicits legal employers nation-wide to recruit students through off-campus programs. These employers include: judges, private law firms, government agencies, public interest organizations, corporations, financial institutions and the military. Most second and third year students participate in the fall semester interviews while first year students begin their self-directed job search and limited on-campus interviews during the spring semester.

Job Postings
All job opportunities including but not limited to, clerkships, internships, and fellowship positions are posted on our online job database system. Students should use our job listing  database to locate such available positions.

Mock Interviews
In order to further develop interview skills, students may choose to participate in Mock Interview Day held in the fall of each year. Students have the opportunity to interview with a practitioner in their area of interest and gain valuable feedback. Students may also contact Career Services throughout the year to arrange a mock interview.

Job Bulletin Exchange
The Office of Career Services exchanges job bulletins with other law schools throughout the nation. This resource provides students and alumni information on job opportunities in specific areas of the U.S. Please contact Career Services for more information.

Workshops/Programs
In addition to hosting the traditional on-campus and off-campus interview programs, the Office of Career Services is thrilled to serve the top 100% of the class. Because on-campus interviews comprise only one method of securing legal employment, the office provides expanded and varied programming throughout the academic year. An example of the varied programming is our Louisiana Small Firm and Public Interest Career Fair. This event, held in mid-March provides Loyola law students an opportunity to network with a multitude of practitioners from the small firm and public sector. Other programming includes our Faculty/Alumni-Student Career Success Luncheons and our Law Practice Specialty Series. In addition, we hold numerous workshops and panels featuring guest speakers and alumni throughout the year, ranging in topic from Networking, Out of State Job Searches Strategies, Surviving OCI, What’s a Summer Associate, and Landing a Job with a Small Firm to the Realities of your 1st Year After law School.

Loyola LAWLINK Network
The network is a valuable resource for students seeking information on a wide range of topics, from various career paths to diverse geographic locations and job market trends. These Mentors have volunteered to share their insights and expertise with students seeking to expand their job-related knowledge and enhance their professional experiences.

The Mentor Directory is especially helpful for networking purposes. Students can use it to establish an assortment of contacts and become involved with the professional legal community. Mentors offer the wisdom of their experiences to assist students in their preparations for life after law school.
